Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the closure began. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, although slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
