Tetris Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a significant prize-giving event nears, one notices a clamor for the addition of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
  • Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games in the world and have been for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
