The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The anticipation about The Game Awards has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer packed with intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team is likely building a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it sparked the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, branching plots, and complex character building—elements that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities only possible by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be approached in a variety of manners, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can anticipate more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
