The New Mayor Pledges a 'New Era' for NYC in Maiden Address
During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” America's largest city, ushering in “a new era” and an audacious start to his tenure.
A Historic Figure
The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.
“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the public whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.
Rejecting counsel to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”
Steering by Socialist Principles
Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my principles for concern of being called extreme,” he said to an enthusiastic response.
The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.
An Ambitious Blueprint
Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

- A cap on rents for about 1 million households
- A experiment of city-run grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion expense of these programs may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
