White House Announces Government Worker Layoffs as Shutdown Nears Three-Week Mark

The White House confirmed the initiation of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, making good on earlier warnings linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought wrote on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s process for letting employees go.

While Vought provided no details on which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Additionally, a DHS spokesperson noted that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union representing federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be affected by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services used by the public and pledged to contest the moves in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who provide essential functions to the public nationwide,” said a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have declined to support a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be resolved soon.

During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP bill, which passed in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and reopen the government,” Johnson said. Beginning shortly, American service members, who often live on tight budgets, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Last week, labor groups filed for a temporary restraining order to block the government from carrying out any layoffs during the funding gap. Moreover, a court official directed the administration to provide specifics on layoff plans, impacted departments, and whether any federal employees had been recalled to carry out layoffs.

A report argued that a government shutdown restricts the ability of the government to carry out firings, referencing official advice that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated before the funding expired.

Impact on Workers

These terminations took place on the same day that federal workers received only a incomplete payment for the final days of September but excluding the start of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the start of the month.

A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, criticized the political stalemate’s impact on government workers.

This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in Congress and the White House have failed to keep our federal operations running,” Stier stated. The flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not at fault for this funding crisis.”

A notable point is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
